Watermelon Begonia

Friday, April 24, 2009

Watermelon begonia (Peperomia Argyreia) has leaves with pale green stripes. It is a slow growing plant and can be placed either outdoor (but undershade like mine below) or indoor.

The pattern of this begonia leaf resembles the pattern of a watermelon, hence its name. Below is a picture of leaves from my garden next to one of watermelons, looking like twin sisters :-)

When I told my husband about the name of this begonia, he was pleased to know that a plant has taken its name after watermelon, his favourite fruit!

In Vietnam there is a
folklore on watermelon, a story about individuals who established a successful life by working hard... very interesting. Hopefully we can be successful gardeners too after working hard on our gardens!

  4. Hi Steph. I like the side-by-side shot. It sure makes a nice looking Begonia. I'm a big fan of watermelon, too. This year I planted some Orangeglo watermelon. And yes, the flesh is supposed to be orange. Crazy.

  7. Hi Steph. I don't have Kaempferia galanga. Do you still have yours? What's your yearly temperature range?

  8. Hi Prospero, yes, I still have the Kaempferia Galanga plant. Currently, the plant is not in good shape as it has been hot and no rain for past two weeks. Nonetheless, I hope one day the leaves will show the pattern. The average temperature is 32 degree Celsius (that's 89 degree Fahreinheit).
