Discover Paya Indah Wetlands

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

When I was at the Paya Indah Wetlands (near Dengkil town) recently, I came across some banners (pic below) that was put up by AEON. Their staff just planted 25,000 trees!

Paya Indah Wetlands is an incredible place for those who are really passionate about nature preservation.

There are chalets for stay-in guests as well. I came across a few ponds that have plenty of lotus plants.

Lotus, teratai or seroja in Malay, and botanically known as Nelumbo Nucifera, grows in fresh water and is n
ative to the Asian subcontinent, from Persia to China and Japan.

Its fragant flowers, in pink, rose or white, bloom for one day only. They are large and held above the water. The fruit, meanwhile, is a conical structure with seeds, each in its own socket.

And at another pond, ducks were seen at the banks and hippos were hiding in the water (but they never got out of the water!).

I spotted mouse deers and crested fireback peasant, Lophura Ignita.

So, if you are at Dengkil, do remember to drop by this wetland. Although they currently do not have much to offer, it is still a good getaway from the busy city life ;-)

  5. Hi Stephanie, you have visited a beautiful place. It is wonderful to see when nature is preserved and so many trees are planted. We always hear how many trees are cut down good to hear the opposite. The Lotus are a precious sight; I have one in a pond and it is a "Diva" she makes always lovely leaves but is very reserved with her flowers. Thank you for your comments.

  6. I didn't know they had hippos! The name doesn't sound interesting.. Paya Indah Wetlands = swamp. They could have done better with the name :P Anyway, interesting place, I might go one day...

Im so surprised that they have hippo's there. Not something that you might find in any ordinary ponds in Malaysia.
