Day to Night Time

We must cultivate our own garden. When a man was put into the garden of Eden, he was put there so that he should work, which means man was not born to rest. -- Voltaire

When it is bright and clear, the rain came pouring. Sometimes in the night also. Regardless, it is also an opportunity to sow seeds and propagate plants in the open :-D No need to check if they need some shelter or water.

The pic below shows a pot of English Lavender (botanical name: Lavandula augustifolia). After flowering the plant just wilted. It wilted even quicker during rainy days.

Fortunately plants like Azalea is tough enough and don't mind the rain at all. The bloom is sweet as a candy :-)

I took time to replant some plants but also threw away some dead plants. One of my hibiscus was sadly 'drowned' (roots rotted) by the frequent rain and cloudy sky. The Sweet Potato Vine plant on the other hand grew a few leaves, promising many more to come.

Another plant that is promising me lots of foliage to follow is my Maidenhair fern (Adiantum sp.). Earlier the fern just dried up as I forgot to water it. I removed all the dried foliage and later saw a few little fronds coming out from the sphagnum moss. Can you see?

Gardening got a little more interesting when I installed some solar lights, that light up in the night, in my garden. In the afternoon the solar panel convert sunlight into power...

In the night, the power is released...

I love watching how the lighted butterfly change colours...

Here is another 'butterfly' on a solar stick light...

During the day, it is pink but at dusk, the glow from the optical fibre changes in colour. There is green, purple, blue, red and pink :)

I often think that the night is more alive and more richly coloured than the day. -- Vincent Van Gogh

  1. Hi Stephanie,
The rain is a blessing and yet too much of it, is not good too! My spring onions bulbs are rotting because of too much rain. I have been sowing some seeds and a daily routine for the past two weeks, to place the pots under the sun in the morning, and move them in shaded area when it gets extremely hot and when it rains. But it all paid off, there are tiny young seedlings now.
The butterflies are really pretty, and they must be a really eye-catcher in the dark!

    1. Hi Joyce,
My spring onions rotted too. But I think there should be one or two bulbs that can re-grow when the sun is back. I was a bit fortunate when I propagated some of the plants, the sun was hiding behind the clouds. The chilli seeds as you know they are easy to sow, so I just direct sow them in the open and into their permanent pot. Re solar butterflies lightings, I have three sticks of them installed in the garden. At night, it feels like Chinese New Year... in whimsy mood hehe... Enjoy today - Labour Day :-D

    1. Hi Normala, leave the azalea in the bright shade for a longer period of time before exposing it to full sun. Never let the soil dry out. It is almost impossible to revive a 'dehydrated' azalea.

  3. I love your solar butterflies. They are whimsical but so pretty. I wish I can get them for my garden too. Are they available at nurseries or at stores? I've given up on planting anything erratic. I now just stick to planting lots of my old favourites so as not to consume precious time.

    1. Hi Stiletto, the solar butterflies are really pretty. You have to see them for yourself. They can be purchased them (and other garden lights - yes solar powered also!) online here... http://www.eliossive.com and Lot 61 at Sungai Buloh Green Lane would have some stock. Soon there will be a kiosk selling these products somewhere in Shah Alam I think. You can call up/inquire from the office. Btw, the old favourites that you have planted in your garden are beautiful!
