Rose of Sharon

Friday, June 19, 2015

The rain and cloudy skies have brought lots of wonderful happenings in my garden. I was glad to see my Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) sending its second bloom and it was huge one. And well formed!!

The shrub has never had a flower this big before. The blooms that were on the shrub when I brought it home about five years ago were only about two-third of this size.

The petals are thicker than the petals of my usual H. rosa-sinensis blooms. Both flowers measures close to 5 inches in diameter.

This time round, the flower has two extra petals. The flower (that I'd shown in earlier post) behind is wilting after it opened the day before.

How strange to see a short shrub bearing such a huge bloom!

Since I took so many pics of this bloom, here is another pic for your admiration ;-)

A butterfly finding nectar from the flower...

The pic below shows the flower close to its actual colour i.e. lavender. The eye is dark red. Because the colour is rich and the size of the bloom is big, I thought this is probably a variety called 'Minerva'.

Can anyone confirm the variety?

Happy growing Rose of Sharon!

  1. wow... so beautiful! I have been looking for this plant for a long time but have never find it yet. I have ever had the double petal of this mawar sharon when I was a young girl, it's a very long time ago. You makes me so jealous...:(

    1. Endah, haha... I hope you will be able to find back that double petal of mawar sharon. Though harder to grow than the usual H. rosa-sinensis, the flowers last longer.

  3. Hi Stephanie, It's like it's put all its energy into that one huge flower. I guess the shrub will grow and then the proportion of flower to green will shift. Anyway, the butterfly is appreciating it, as well as us, your readers.

    1. Hi Normala, move to partial sun location. The white flies will still come, so I fed the plant with more nutrients to keep it healthy and resilient.

  8. So many of Malve and Hibiscus plants are commonly called Rose of Sharon. It looks beautiful. Yours might be Hibiscus syriacus.

    1. That's right, Titania and hello! Yesterday I did the most silly thing. In a hurry of pruning my plants, I discarded a stem with two new flower buds. I should have check before cutting. Well, I am hoping to see more flowers from this H. syriacus. It is a difficult plant to grow for me.
