On 28 July 1960, the Malaysian government proclaimed 'Bunga Raya' or Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis (also known as the Queen of Tropical Flowers) as the National Flower of Malaysia. The Genus Hibiscus belongs to the cotton family of Malvaceae and consists of about 300 species.
Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis is well known and commonly grown as hedges fencing in many houses here. The plant is non-seasonal, flowers throughout the year and easily grown. The flower has beautiful wide petals. Symbolically, the colour red represents courage.
These pictures were taken at the Kuala Lumpur Hibiscus Garden, which was officially opened on 16 October 1989 by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohd Ali, the former First Lady. The garden opens everyday from from 9.00am to 6.00pm. On weekdays admission is free while on weekends and public holidays visitor needs to pay only RM1 to enter.
