Bangkok Rose
Sunday, May 03, 2009I pass by this row of Bangkok Rose shrubs very often. They are located just before the entrance of the Taman Tun Dr Ismail wet market's car park. Recently, the flowers popped-out in full bloom in three different colours.
Mussaenda Philippica, as they are botanically known, originated from Asia. They love the tropical hot climate. The plant's colour comes from its flower sepals and not the small (often yellow, white or orange) flowers at the centre of each cluster. The blooms are in terminal clusters with each having enlarged sepals. Sometimes the enlarged sepals are erroneously referred to as bracts (A bract is a leafy structure which is distinct from the flower proper e.g. Poinsettia bracts).
Below are clusters of Mussaenda Philippica...
The peach-coloured Mussaenda Philippica Queen Sirikit...
And white Mussaenda Philippica Dona Aurora with a little yellow flower...
Musseanda Philippica plant seems like an all-time favourite of many commercial and private gardeners here. I see them planted in many public places, recreational parks and homes for as long as I could remember. They are simply lovely!

ReplyDeleteHi Steph, I've read that Mussaenda philippica seeds are difficult to obtain. I'll keep my eye out for them, though. Thanks for posting this. It's a plant that many will be interested in reading about.
ReplyDeleteSteph, this is completely new to me...never seen or heard of this rose before. It's huge and just loaded with blooms. I like the cream one with the dark edges. What a nice view to enjoy while at the market. Thanks for visiting my garden and your nice comments.
