Sunkist Blooms

Monday, September 27, 2010

My orange hibiscus has finally bursted its first flower. Earlier I sheared the branches as the plant was heavily infested with mealy bugs. Now it is just a short shrub. The plant was propagated from stem cuttings I asked from a stranger (see my earlier post).

One thing that I like about this hibiscus is that the colour changes by the hour. I like the orange shade best when the sun is shinning brightly in the afternoon. That's when the colour looks pastel.

I am seeing more and more Chinese hatplant blossoms already! I have been re-constructing its look a number of times. Now I have erected an upside down 'A' system using bamboo sticks (flat like an espalier) for the vines to grow. The plant seems to like this system better.

Gaillardia is my one of the latest additions to my garden. The petals do not hold up well to the heavy rain but love the sun.

Caught a bee (not sure if they are two?) in my portulaca flower...

Petite gerbera has been constantly blooming her cheerful flower...

Have a great day and enjoy the blooms that are in your garden!

  2. That's a gorgeous colour on the Hibiscus. The main reason I grow the old rosa-sinensis variety and the Snowflake and Roseflake varieties now is the fact that they don't get infested with mealybugs like the newer varieties. Unfortunately though the varieties I grow only get red flowers ... no lovely colours like yours!

Love that Chinese Hatplant ... that's a new plant for me. What interesting blooms!

  21. A very pretty orange collection in your garden. I think orange is the colour for the tropical garden. I love it when the orange coloured blooms peek through the foliage.
