My First Sweetheart Hoya

Saturday, March 07, 2009

I bought two Hoya Kerrii Variegated heart-shaped leaves on Tuesday at Ikea. The leaves are green in the centre and yellow at the sides. Each leaf was planted in a tiny plastic pot. I repotted both of them into a small square pot and placed the pot in a bright shade/partial sun (morning sun) spot in my garden.

Hoya Kerrii is a member of the milkweed (Asclepiadaceae) family. The milky sap which flows out from the stems when it's cut is poisonous. It is a very slow growing plant and takes years to turn into a beautiful climber plant with fragrant flowers.

I am following the plant care instructions given on the tiny plastic pot. However, I have a feeling that this will not be an easy plant for me to handle. I have a habit of over-watering cactus and succulent plants, so in days to come I got to think twice before I water.

I am still looking for the solid green hoya which Ikea was selling earlier. Hope that they will replenish the stock soon in the future. Meanwhile, if you would like to grow this variegated type also, you can go and grab one from Ikea today :-)

  5. This plant is a vine. I have bought the leaves like this before and they will not make a plant. It will forever just be a rooted leaf. To get a vine, you will need to purchase at least cutting with a bud on it. These will not grow.

  7. This two hoya leaves wilted after one and a half years. One rotted at the side and another just dried up. Although I am still keeping one of them (root only) in the soil. I doubt there will be any progress. If I remember correctly, each leaf was about RM5.
